Omit all articles
- When using a noun in general sense.
- Eg: Man is a mammal
- With proper nouns, unless the proper noun is used as a common noun
- Eg: Kalidasa is the Shakespeare of India
- Before plural nouns used to denote a class
- Eg: Children are usually naughty.
- Before days months and seasons.
- Before a common noun used in the vocative case
- Eg: Brother, I will help you.
- When a noun indicates rank, title , occupation, etc and is used just like an adjective
- Eg: Lord Byron, King Akbar, Major Ravi, Dr.Kalam
- Before a title used in apposition to a proper noun or as a the complement of a verb.
- Eg: Edward, King of England.
- In verbal and prepositional phrases, to achieve conciseness
- Eg: To give ear, To turn tail.
- In prepositional phrases.
- Eg: On land, at sea, out of doors etc.
- Before the names of diseases.
- Exceptions - the measles, the mumps
